Why Write?

December 12, 2009

A response to http://www.dailywriting.net/Titan.htm

why write?

the look, the feel of words on a page

their sounds in the mouth

rich juicy powerful words

-

a glimpse of something deeper

something just behind those words

almost seen, deeply felt

-

what use, if not for some purpose?

joy?

a little understanding gleaned

some knowledge seeping through from somewhere deeper, darker

a world become richer, deeper

a being changed

-

Long I have been captivated by words, their shapes, their sounds, their feel, their power. Too long I have been afraid to put pen to paper: afraid of what might come out of that tiny pen, afraid of what others might think, of being judged, of opening doors that may not wish to be closed, of releasing a flood over which i have no control, of things never being the same again. Too much fear, a dangerous numbing thing.

Let this be my new beginning. The choice? To live a life of quiet safe numbness, or to risk being thrown into the deep dark depths of Tartarus for the sake of listening to those voices that sing, that cry, that dance, that wail, that moan, for the sake of coming out a little wiser, a little braver, with some bruises from the journey, seeing things a little bit more clearly and with a heart that sings and knows that wherever I am supposed to go, I will get there eventually. The choice I have made. I put my best foot forward and look forward to a journey full of surprises, with ups and downs, highs and lows, and to follow this road wherever it may go.

And no turning back.

  1. Hi, Bonnie. You have used such rich sensory images to describe the act of writing. I know your journey with be a wonderful experience.

  2. I salute your courage in going to the brink of Tartarus itself. You will find the deep dark depths of this place far less terrifying than popular view would lead you to believe. Having a reason to write, knowing someone cares is enough to fuel a passion.

  3. You use beautiful and compelling imagery here. I’m sure you’re writer’s journey will bring you many rewards.

  4. Thought provoking post. Every once in a while someone ask that question & it’s hard to explain. Espcially when it’s usually followed by, “Are you published?” b/c it’s assumed that’s the ony reason to write.

    • Katirra, you hit the nail on the head. When I tell people that I write and make art, they say where are you published or where are showing? When I say online, I get this dismissive “Oh, online” as if what I wrote or made was of lesser value. Oh, don’t get me started……….. :)

      • Yeah, I know. I find that very annoying. Especially since I’ve seen “art” displays/exhibits that I’d doubtfully call art. Not a fan of stuff like a ratty 20yr. recliner & giving it a fancy name like, “Woeful Recliner on the Brink of Doom” for $$$$. & I’ve read plenty of published work that was well, not good. (to put it nicely.)
